Megadeth is an American thrash metal band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1983 by guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson, shortly after Mustaine was fired from his previous band, Metallica.

After the stabilization of the formation in the 1990s, Megadeth released numerous platinum-certified records, including the famous Rust in Peace which is responsible for the popularization of the group.

In 2002, Megadeth was temporarily inactive following Mustaine's left arm damage. However, the group returned in 2004, but without bassist David Ellefson, at this time in conflict with Dave Mustaine.

Ellefson finally returned to the group in 2010, and remained there until 2021.

As of November 2018, the group has sold around 50 million albums worldwide.
