Sludge metal bands initially engage in slow, downbeat music, typically characterized by heavy rhythms and a dark atmosphere, simplified instrumentation, and lyrics often laden with nihilistic messages.

 The term "sludge" is used to designate the so-called "muddy" guitar sound due in particular to the strong distortions and fuzz associated with the deliberately dirty sound in the pure tradition of hardcore punk and extreme metal.
